About Yakir About Yakir

Equally versed both in classical music and jazz, Yakir Arbib stands as an internationally acclaimed improviser.

Born with perfect pitch and Synesthesia (a blending of the senses), Arbib possesses the ability to create entire musical compositions on the spot – without any prior preparation. His unique trait of “seeing” musical tones as distinct colors guides him in his creative process: he visualizes a landscape of colours, which he translates into sounds and later transcribes into music notation.

A Berklee College of Music alumni, Yakir has won several international prizes, including the America-Israel Cultural Foundation for young talents (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009) and the “Massimo Urbani International Jazz Award” (2008). In July 2015 he won Second Prize at the Montreux International Piano Jazz Competition, and was declared as “the most extremely original pianist” by the jury. At age 19, he was signed by the European “Philology Jazz Records” (Chet Baker, Lee Konitz and Phil Woods) under which he released his first album in trio “Portrait”.

Arbib currently tours the world both as a solo artist giving piano recitals, and with other groups which perform his music. He has performed and collaborated with international artists including Al Jarreau, Nils Petter Molvaer, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Chris Cheek, Fred Johnson, Darren Barrett, Massimo Manzi, Luca Bulgarelli, and Theodore Antoniou. He is the leader of a Jazz Trio and has toured and released the album “Sketches on the Radio” with drummer Roberto Giaquinto as a duo named Radio Intro.

Arbib has appeared in venues such as the ‘Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts’ (Washington D.C.), ‘Tanna Schulich Hall’ (Montreal), the ‘Jerusalem Theater’ (Jerusalem), ‘Montreux Palace Theater’ (Montreux), and the ‘Teatro Vascello’ (Rome) among others. He has been featured on radio stations worldwide such as “CIBL 101,5” (Montreal, Canada), “TSF Jazz” (Paris, France), “RTS” (Switzerland), “Dobop” (Tel Aviv, Israel), Rai Radio 3 (Italy) and on several TV broadcasters among which Rai 2, Sky Classica, TV2000 and Medici TV.
